Understanding The Pain/Passion Threshold

My knee has been hurting quite a bit...

And it's 100% my own fault...

But I'm not sorry.

Earlier this year I joined our church indoor soccer team: Joy FC.

And I'm having an absolute blast!

I dream about our match all week...and I'm nervous all day until the match starts.

Then I run around like a crazed ape for 40 minutes until I almost black out from oxygen deprivation.

Recently I ended up subbing in for another team so I played in 2 games.

Needless to say, I'm a fair bit older than the 20 somethings on the team.

And my body isn't bouncing back nearly as fast as it used to.

But the pain is nothing compared to the joy.

Oh the joy!

Having fun with my team, competing, pushing myself to the limit...and scoring 4 goals this season so far (yeah, not too shabby right?) is so incredibly rewarding.

I'm having a blast.

The pain I feel after the games pales in comparison to the joy of playing.

That's a threshold you need to be aware of as a leader.

I call it the "Pain/Passion" threshold.

People only move when the passion exceeds the pain.

Want attenders to become members?

It only happens when the passion exceeds the pain.

Want members to become disciples?

It only happens when the passion exceeds the pain.

Want disciples to become leaders?

It only happens when the passion exceeds the pain.

See the pattern here?

As a leader, your job is to inspire people with fresh vision and motivate them with what's possible when they take a step forward.

Yeah, there's pain in the offering.

But there's breakthrough on the other side of sacrifice!

The Bible tells us that "Jesus endured the cross for the joy that was set before Him."

That's the pain/passion threshold at work.

If you understand it as a leader you'll be able to encourage and equip your people to move forward in their journey of becoming more like Jesus.

And your church will grow in number, influence, generosity, and impact!
