Taking Care Of The Engine

The Hidden Cost Of Self-Care

We recently sold a car that created A LOT of headaches for us!

It was a nice car but had some major mechanical problems…

Engine trouble…ugh.

We joked that we spent more time in the loaner car from the mechanic’s shop than the car itself.

It reminded me of the importance of keeping OUR engine healthy as pastors and leaders.

So let’s go a little deeper today…

I’m talking about YOU.

How’s your heart?

How’s your soul?

When someone asks you that question do you immediately say, “Oh I’m good! I’m doing great!”

Because I know that ministry is TOUGH…even in the best seasons.

Here’s the deal…

As a pastor/leader and Christ follower you’ve got to take care of the “engine!”

The engine is you.

Your body, soul, and spirit.

If you’re having “engine” problems it impacts your whole church!

That’s why I encourage pastors to give serious time and attention to keeping themselves healthy and in good working order.

Many pastors are “present” in body but “absent” from giving their best and biggest contribution because of an unhealthy body, soul, or spirit.

A great first step is to begin to take a Christ centered approach to physical health.

Here’s a newsletter I came across for Christians dealing with chronic health issues. Christ centered - holistic approach.

Second, I wholeheartedly recommend a daily time with Jesus!

Yeah, I know…might sound kind of basic.

But daily devotions are like brushing your teeth…

Eventually someone will notice when it’s not happening!

Sometimes are simple, basic disciplines are the first to slip.

Have a great week!
