Thoughts From Matthew 21

This morning in my daily Bible reading I read through Matthew 21 and 22.

As you recall, chapter 21 records Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

The crowds hailed him!

“Hosanna to the Son of David!
‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
Hosanna in the highest!”

Some spread their coats on the road as Jesus rode forward.

Others cut down fronds and placed them on the road.

But as we know, some of these same people would soon cry, “Crucify him, crucify him!”

The people had a false expectation.

They acclaimed Jesus as the son of David.

This was a messianic term, and their hope was that Jesus was their political Messiah.

We have the benefit of hindsight to know that, as Jesus said, “His kingdom is not of this world.” But even some of Jesus’ disciples could only see Him through the lens of political salvation.

Jesus didn't come as the political Messiah for Israel, but rather to inaugurate the kingdom of heaven.

Then something interesting happened.

Jesus, shows His hand, because immediately after being hailed as the Son of David and ushered in on a wave of political/military hope…he doesn’t raise an army, or gather followers, or give a rousing speech to the crowd.

Instead He goes straight to the temple and as Matthew records…

Matthew 21 - 12 Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 13 And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’

Jesus went to the temple.

His revolution started in the House of God.

Purity in the church leads to transformation in the city.

This is why I’m so passionate about encouraging and equipping pastors!

Because YOU, pastor, have the calling to cleanse the temple and set it in order.

There is nothing more revolutionary than a faithful Acts 2 church living out it’s God-given mission and mandate in the heart of the city!

There is nothing more life-giving than an Ephesians 4 church that is “healthy, and growing, and full of love.”

And that’s what I’m 100% committed to helping pastors lead their churches into!

The courses and coaching are simply a way to connect and engage for the purpose of discipleship.

Are you ready to join the revolution?

Blessings,

Pastor Jake
